Learn About Asthma and How
to Manage It
Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the lungs, causing symptoms like wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing, particularly at night or early in the morning. Asthma can come and go, but it's a lifelong condition that requires ongoing management.

What Causes Asthma?
The exact cause of asthma is unknown, but it's often triggered by inhaling certain substances in the air, such as pollen. If someone in your family has asthma, you are more likely to have it as well. Asthma can affect anyone, regardless of race, age, or gender, and it can vary in severity from person to person. The best way to manage asthma is to work with your doctor to create a personalized treatment plan.

How Do You Know If You Have Asthma?
If you experience symptoms like frequent coughing (especially at night), difficulty breathing after physical activity, chest tightness, or colds that last more than 10 days, it’s important to see your doctor. Your doctor will ask about your symptoms, family history, and may perform a lung test called spirometry to measure how well your lungs are functioning before and after using asthma medication.

What Are Asthma Attacks?
An asthma attack occurs when the airways in your lungs become inflamed and narrow, making it difficult to breathe. Common symptoms during an asthma attack include coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness. Triggers for asthma attacks include tobacco smoke, dust mites, outdoor pollution, mold, pets, and respiratory infections like the flu.

How Can You Control Asthma?
Managing asthma requires a proactive approach:

Regular doctor visits: Schedule your annual well-care visit and follow your doctor's recommendation for check-ups.

Medication adherence: Take your prescribed medication as directed, even when you feel fine.

Avoid Triggers: Identify and avoid the things that can trigger an asthma attack.

Create an asthma action plan: Work with your doctor to develop a personalized plan that outlines how to manage asthma daily and during an attack.

Taking control of your asthma can help you live a healthier, more active life. If you have any questions or need further guidance, be sure to talk with your doctor.
