Better Health Matters - Heat Stroke Prevention

Spot the Signs: Preventing Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke This Summer

Summer is in full swing. July brings fun and outdoor activities, but it also brings high temperatures and humidity. The heat isn't just annoying, it can also be dangerous. When your body can’t cool itself down properly, heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heatstroke can occur. These illnesses can be life-threatening, but they are preventable. So what is the key? Knowing what to watch for, and how to protect yourself and your loved ones before symptoms start!

Know the Warning Signs
Understanding the difference between heat exhaustion and heatstroke can help you act quickly and keep yourself and loved ones safe in the heat.
Signs of Heat Exhaustion:
  • Extreme thirst
  • Cramping
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Cool, clammy skin
  • Heavy sweating
  • Body temperature under 105°F
Signs of Heatstroke (Call 911 Immediately):
  • Body temperature at or above 105°F
  • Confusion or loss of consciousness
  • Rapid breathing or heart rate
  • Hot, red, or dry skin
  • Seizures
  • Little to no sweating

How to Prevent Heatstroke
So how do you prevent heat stroke? Stay ahead of it! These smart habits can help you stay cool and protected all summer long:
  • Stay hydrated. Drink water regularly. Waiting until you’re thirsty may be too late.
  • Dress cool enough for hot weather. Stick with loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing.
  • Avoid peak heat. Stay indoors or in the shade during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Use sunscreen. Sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool down.
  • Be aware of medications. Talk with your doctor to see if any of your medications increase sensitivity to heat.
  • Never leave anyone in a parked car. Even just for a minute is too long to leave a person or pet in a hot car.
  • Know who is at risk. Older adults, young children, and people with chronic illnesses are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
