Better Health Matters: Heat Exhaustion vs Heatstroke

In very hot weather, high humidity, and other conditions, body heat can build to dangerous levels.

This can cause heat illness, such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or heatstroke.

Heat exhaustion starts slowly, but if it’s not quickly treated it can progress to heatstroke. In heatstroke, a person’s temperature reaches 105°F (40.5°C) or higher.

What Are the Signs & Symptoms of HEAT EXHAUSTION?

  1. increased thirst

  2. weakness and extreme tiredness

  3. fainting

  4. muscle cramps

  5. nausea and vomiting

  6. irritability

  7. headache

  8. increased sweating

  9. cool, clammy skin

  10. body temperature rises, but to less than 105°F (40.5°C)

 

What Are the Signs & Symptoms of HEAT STROKE?

  1. severe headache

  2. weakness, dizziness

  3. confusion

  4. fast breathing and heartbeat

  5. loss of consciousness (passing out)

  6. seizures

  7. little or no sweating

  8. flushed, hot, dry skin

  9. body temperature rises to 105°F (40.5°C) or higher

 

Prevention:

  1. Wear loose fitting, lightweight clothing

  2. Protect against sunburn

  3. Drink plenty of fluids

  4. Be careful with certain medications

  5. Never leave anyone in a parked car

  6. Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day

  7. Get acclimated

  8. Be cautious if you’re at increased risk
